INTACH History

THE history of INTACH outlines the development made by it since its inception. A brief overview of the various significant development and events that led to the making and growth of INTACH over the years is outlined here:

1982 The Charles Wallace William Memorial Society is registered; the principal and the interest is transferred to this society
1984 INTACH is registered; the amount is transferred from the Charles Wallace William Memorial Society to INTACH and invested, in consultation with SBI, London
1984 INTACH’s first project, Project Ganga, is launched
1984 INTACH’s first newsletter is printed
1984 INTACH sets up the Art Heritage (AH) Division
1984 INTACH sets up the Natural Resource Division
1985 50% tax exemption is received for donations made to INTACH under the Income Tax Act
1985 INTACH proposes the National Conservation Strategy
1985 The Lucknow Conservation Center is established as INTACH’s first Conservation Center
1985 May: The Natural Resource Division is renamed the Natural Heritage (NH) Division
1985-6 The INTACH Conservation Center becomes an associate member of ICCROM
1985 November: The North-Eastern Areas Cell is established
1986 The INTACH logo is finalized
1986 Proposals for scholarships from the INTACH (UK) Trust fund are approved by the Ministries of External Affairs, Home Affairs, Education, and the Department of Culture
1985-6 The National Cultural Heritage Bill is drafted
1986 MANUS (a collaborative project on the compilation and conservation of manuscripts) is launched with IGNCA
1987 The first listing of built heritage (Shekhavati) is completed
1987 A proposal is floated to have the INTACH (UK) Trust formally registered as a charity
1987 INTACH finalizes a deal with Doordarshan to produce and telecast a 13-episode television series on heritage issues and conservation called Virasat
1988 INTACH develops and proposes the concept of Heritage/Conservation Zones
1988 The School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi introduces a post-graduate course in conservation with inputs and support from INTACH
1988 The INTACH (UK) Trust is set up; the first meeting of the trust is held on July 7
1988 Virasat series telecast begins on Doordarshan
1989 The National Project on Wall Paintings is launched
1989 Young INTACH is launched as a parallel movement to encourage youth participation in heritage conservation
1989 April: The Hindi Cell is established at the Central Office
1989 Orissa becomes the first state to complete listing of built heritage
1989-90 The Computer Cell is established at the Central Office
1990 January: The INTACH Art Conservation Center at New Delhi is established
1990 Work begins on establishing the Library of Historic Cities
1990 April: The Southern Regional Office for Environmental Education and Research is established at Thiruvananthpuram
1990 Professor Doshi from M/s Stein, Doshi and Bhalla is appointed architect for the new INTACH headquarters building
1992 A decision is taken to replace one of INTACH’s two Secretaries with an Executive Director responsible for the management of the trust
1992 September: The Hindi edition of the Virasat newsletter is launched
1992-3 The INTACH Central Office and other divisions at Delhi shift from 71, Lodhi Estate, to the Bharatiyam Complex in Nizamuddin
1993 The INTACH Chitrakala Parishath Art Conservation Center at Bangalore is established
1994 The Oral Testimony project is launched in Garhwal and Kumaon to record the traditions and experiences of hill people with reference to development
1995 The Indian Conservation Institute (ICI) Orissa Art Conservation Center at Bhubaneshwar and the ICI Art Conservation Center at Rampur are established
1996 The ICI Mehrangarh Art Conservation Center at Jodhpur is established
1997 The INTACH Central Office’s new building at 71, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi, is ready
1997 The MH Division is renamed the INTACH Indian Council of Conservation Institutes
1998 INTACH’s Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) is established
1998 The Jaisalmer Conservation Initiative is launched as the first project where INTACH also intervenes in renewing the historic fabric of the fort
1998 The INTACH Computer Pilot Project is launched at the Central Office to enable network connectivity between different divisions and sections
1998 December: The INTACH Central Office and other divisions shift from the Bharatiyam Complex to the new building at 71, Lodhi Estate
1999 INTACH’s Web site is launched: www.intach.net
1999 The Charles Wallace Institute for Conservation Research and Training is established at Lucknow with the support of the INTACH (UK) Trust
1999 Membership of INTACH is reopened for all categories of members
1999 The legal cell of INTACH is temporarily disbanded
2000 The Mural Painting Conservation Research and Training Center (MCRTC) at Thrissur is established
2000 Various committees are established to handle specific areas: these include the Project Monitoring Committee, Chapters Committee, Membership Committee, Coordination Committee, Finance Committee, Committee on Resource Mobilization and Public Relations, and Chapter Projects and Listing Committee
2000 The Virasat 2000-2001 Awareness Campaign is launched by HECS
2001 The Cochin Initiative is launched to encourage partnerships between INTACH, governments and other organizations
2001 INTACH signs MoUs with the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and AusHeritage
2001 The Mahavir Digambar Jain Pandulipi Sanrakshan Kendra, Jaipur, is established
2002 INTACH’s Jaisalmer Project receives the British Airways Award of the year and an Honorable Mention by the UNESCO
2002 INTACH’s involvement leads to Pragpur (Himachal Pradesh) being declared India’s first heritage village
2003 The INTACH Documentation Center is established
2004 INTACH celebrates twenty years
2004 INTACH’s first overseas Chapter is inaugurated in Belgium
2004 November: INTACH Vision 2020 is organized as a national meet which results in the Vision 2020 Charter. The INTACH Charter for the Conservation of Unprotected Architectural Heritage and Sites is adopted.
2004 INTACH’s Cultural Affairs Division is established
2005 April: INTACH’s Web site is completely redesigned and put online as www.intach.org
2005 October: INTACH is nominated to the Steering Committee of the International National Trust Organization (INTO; formerly the International Conference of National Trusts)
2005 INTACH signs an MoU with Tourism Training Canada (TTC), of the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council
2005 The INTACH US Chapter is inaugurated in New York City
2005 INTACH’s Heritage Tourism Division is established
2005 INTACH’s Heritage Craft Cell opens at 71, Lodhi Estate
2005 A Conservation Center is established at Kolkata
2005 INTACH helps set up a Conservation Center at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai
2006 INTACH signs MoUs with the School of Travel Industry Management, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Honolulu; and the City of Ballarat in Australia
2006 The Rural Heritage Education program is launched in villages around Orchha and Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh
2006 The Cantonments Act, 2006, is brought about as a result of INTACH’s efforts
2008 The Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Division is established
2009 INTACH’s Silver Jubilee Year
