Memory of Professor Aparna Rao (1950 - 2005)
This is a
memorial lecture to remember Aparna Rao’s tireless
work in the field of nomadic cultures — foragers,
pastoralists, and the peripatetics she christened the
Other Nomads.
Dr. Vasant Saberwal has been a grant-maker at the Ford
Foundation. he was Director of Research at Moving
Images, an independent environmental documentary film
production house. He has a PhD in environmental
studies from Yale University. Both his academic work
and his documentary films explored issues relating to
the politics of access to natural resources. His
publications include Pastoral Politics: Shepherds,
Bureaucrats and Conservation in the Western Himalaya
and, as co-editor, Battles Over Nature: Science and
the Politics of Wildlife Conservation.
Prof. T.N. Madan is Honorary Professor at the
Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. He is an Honorary
Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute (London)
and Docteur Honoris Causa of the University of Paris (Nanterre).
His publications include Religions in India,
Non-Renunciation: Themes and Interpretations of Hindu
Culture and Modern Myths, Locked Minds: Secularism and
Fundamentalism in India. TN Madan was in the process
of editing The Valley of Kashmir: The Making and
Unmaking of a Composite Culture? with Aparna Rao.
