A seminar on
'Heritage Management' was held in New Delhi at Ashoka Hotel on December 15-16, 2006. This two-day seminar
focused on heritage management issues like management
of sites (protected, unprotected and world heritage
sites), management and urban renewal, heritage and tourism
management, human resource development and funding.

Interpreting
the Heritage of the North-East
Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, September 28-29, 2005
INTACH held a conference at Itanagar on September 28-29,
2005 on the theme ‘Interpreting the Heritage of the
North-East’. The scholars, officials, media-persons and
tourism facilitators came together to discuss how the
natural, built and intangible heritages of the seven
states of this region could be documented, presented, and
incorporated into a programme of culture-sensitive
tourism. The papers presented are being incorporated in a
book, on the lines of earlier INTACH publications on
coastal regions and hill areas. Following topics were
discussed in the Conference:
- Indigenous knowledge systems, biodiversity and culture
- economic and material heritage and craft traditions
- agencies of change - grassroots, media organizations,
government agencies
- development of culture sensitive tourism
Patiala
Evening
London, July 11, 2005
In order to create awareness about the activities of
INTACH with a view to garner funds for many of our
Projects, an evening was organized in London by the Indian
High Commission, the Nehru Centre and INTACH’s London
Chapter, where a photographic exhibition and a film on
INTACH was shown. The main focus of the event was Patiala,
particularly the ‘Qila Mubarak’ for which funds are
being sought for restoration. At a later stage a similar
event is planned to be organized for the city of Gwalior
and Chanderi. The function was addressed by Chairman
INTACH. The host organizers were Shri. Natwar Singh,
Minister of External Affairs and Capt. Amarinder singh,
Chief Minister of Punjab.

Conservation and Urban Development
Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, May 28-29, 2005
The seminar focused on the status of urban heritage
and addressed the ways to conserve it. It included
discussions on reuse and regeneration as an effective tool
in urban conservation, byelaws and new constructions, the
economic sustainability of urban conservation and a review
of existing policies and legislations. Case studies of
some of the cities were presented at the seminar.

Heritage
Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, May 12-14, 2005
The workshop focused on all facets of tribal culture
to find an interface with tourism so as to generate more
employment and better means of livelihood. Topics
discussed included Tribal Lifestyles, Tribal Arts and
Literature, Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Tribal
Sensitivity and Tourism.

Expert Symposium: Creative Communities: A Strategy for the
21st Century
Nagaur, Rajasthan, February 23-25, 2005
The symposium on Cultural Industries: a Strategy for
the 21st century was organised by INTACH and UNESCO from
February 23-25, 2005 at Nagaur, Rajasthan. The symposium
provided a unique experience to all the participants since
it was held within the Nagaur Fort’s premises in tents.
The 3-day symposium saw a continuous dialogue between
experts from all over the world and India, from
professional ranging from bureaucrats to policy makers to
implementers in the field of cultural industries. At the
end of the 3 days, a draft consensus was prepared and
circulated to all the participants.
Cultural
Survival and Revival in the Buddhist Sangha
Gangtok, Sikkim, January 18-20, 2005
“The Cultural Survival and Revival in the Buddhist
Sangha” project was initiated by UNESCO in 2000 with
primary support from the Government of Norway. It aims to
build traditional local capacity in heritage conservation
in Asia by reviving traditional decorative arts and
building crafts, and developing preventative conservation
skills among local caretakers of heritage, in particular
amongst religious communities, such as the Buddhist sangha.
INTACH in collaboration with UNESCO organised the first
annual South Asia Sub-regional Caucus in Gangtok, Sikkim
from January 18-20, 2005. INTACH was also entrusted with
the preparation of the guidelines for the project
assessment and monitoring of the Project.
INTACH
Vision 2020
New Delhi, November 2-4, 2004
On the occasion of the completion of 20 years INTACH
organised a 3-day conference at Ashoka Hotel, Chanakyapuri,
New Delhi to which all our Convenors had been invited. The
purpose of the conference was to envision INTACH’s role
in the next 20 years. One of the achievements at the
conference was the consensus reached on the Charter for
Conservation, which is now available at INTACH. Besides
Convenors, a number of international and Indian experts
had been invited.
